Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company
exploring the untapped potential of pakistan’s ample coal reserves
A joint venture between the Government of Sindh and Engro Powergen Limited (EPL),
The Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company was established in the year 2009 with the primary objective of making effective use of the ample coal reserves in the Thar Desert to meet Pakistan’s power generation needs, spur economic development, and bring energy security to the country.
Recently we completed a feasibility study of a coal mining project that aims to supply coal to a 1,200 MW Power Plant to be set up by Engro Powergen Limited. The assessment of the project was conducted by world renowned consultants RWE-RE GmbH, Germany and Sinocoal International Engineering Research and Design Institute, China.
We have also engaged Hagler Bailly Pakistan and SRK Consulting UK to undertake an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment of the mining project to ensure compliance with internationally accepted environmental and social standards including the International Finance Corporation and the World Bank Group guidelines.
Additional mining and power generation projects of The Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company are expected to commence commercial operations by the year 2016.
In May 2013 the Company (SECMC) set up a wholly-owned subsidiary, namely Thar Power Company Limited. TPCL was set up to conduct the Feasibility study of the power plant.
